Long-term Nature Study Project

2003-2004

Objective:

Students will scientifically study their own 1m x 1m plot of ÒnaturalÓ land for approximately 6 weeks.  Students will collect and identify plants, estimate the population of all living organisms within the plot, attempt to find symbiotic endophytes, and keep track of the changes that occur during the six-week study period.  In addition to this, students will create a map, include photos, and a summary of their findings in a final report.

Alaska Standards:

         Science- A14, A15, B1, B4, B5, B6

            Math-   A2, A6

            Writing- EA1, EA2

Guidelines to follow:

1.  Groups of 3 or 4 students.  Must stay in same group for the entire 6 week study session, and equally share in the work.

2.   Plotted area must be approved by the instructor, be 1 m2 and be as ÒnaturalÓ as possible.  It should be selected on a random basis, and it should support a wide diversity of plant-life.

3.  Students will be graded on their participation in the project, and on a comprehensive report that will be turned in at the end of the study period. Due dates will be decided at a later time, and a scoring rubric will be provided.

Each report must contain the following information:  +120 pts.

Þ  A collection of plant samples, properly identified, pressed and displayed (photo album pages work great). The approximate population (population sample) of each species should be included. +20 pts.

Þ  A journal of the observations made over the course of the 6 week period.  The observations should include the date, time of day, weather conditions (temp, humidity, wind speed, amount of cloud cover, etc.), soil temperature, and any changes in the plant/animal life that you notice occurring over the 6 week study period. +10 pts./each

Þ  A map showing where your plot is located in relation to the high school.  (Be specific, measure distances accurately) +10 pts.

Þ  Report should also include photos of the plot over the course of the study period. (Digital camera O.K.) +10 pts.

Þ  A summary of your findings. (See Journal Notes II handout and Labstract Report) +20
