Freshman year, one semester class
Required for graduation from VHS
There are three major units of study in the health curriculum.
I. Stress: what it is and how to deal with it in a positive manner.
Self Esteem: how to develop and maintain a positive self-image.
Conflict Resolution: how to identify sources of conflict, and the positive choices one can make to resolve conflicts.
Violence: refusal skills, school violence, bullies, violent relationships.
II. Substance Use and Abuse: focusing on tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.
III. STDÍs, HIV, and sexual responsibility to yourself, your partner, and society.
Classes are run with an open discussion format, along with video presentations, and guest speakers. Class work and homework will consist of writing paragraphs
to answer questions about the concept discussed, work sheets, role-plays, essays, projects, quizzes and tests. Students are required to keep an organized notebook with all of the handouts and returned homework. The teacher may use this notebook as an added assessment tool.
