Gilson JH "Battle of the Books - 2004-05"

The WINNERS of the Book Battle in Valdez - 2004-05! Erin McDermott, Genevieve Murphy, Andrea Knowles, and Audrey Ureda, call their team "The Rolling Stones".

The state battles this year will take place on March 1st by teleconference.

"Battle of the Books is an Alaskan reading motivational and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension and promote academic excellence."
Seventh and eighth grade students read from a list of 12 books, chosen annually by a committee of Alaskan librarians and teachers. The books vary as to genre and difficulty, and can include historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, and classics.
A battle team consists of 4 members (or fewer), one who serves as an alternate. The team members must know all the titles and matching authors and must write their answers down within a 30 second time period after hearing their question.
Students can earn prizes as they read here at Gilson Jr. High and can also get extra credit in some of their classes if they choose to read a battle book.
